9:00 a.m. Competence: Substance Abuse in the Legal Profession: In this compelling presentation Greg Dorst JD, CADC II, Consultant to the Other Bar, will discuss the harmful effects of alcohol and drug abuse and how to recognize them; why legal professionals are prone to addiction; the impacts to family, friends, employers, clients and colleagues; and when it is time to get professional help to preserve health and career. Mr. Dorst will use his own personal journey and experience to illustrate these concepts. He will identify resources, including the Other Bar, which can facilitate the recovery process.

10:15 a.m. Legal Ethics: Samuel C. Bellicini is a solo practitioner in San Rafael California, a past president of the Association of Discipline Defense Counsel, and a member of the Other Bar. From his unique and invaluable perspective as both a respected State Bar discipline defense attorney and a former defendant, he will provide an overview of the State Bar’s discipline system, outlining and explaining the process, and enumerating the types of attorney conduct most commonly resulting in bar complaints and discipline.

11:30 a.m. Elimination of Bias in the Legal Profession: Practicing in a fair and ethical manner requires awareness of our biases and constantly challenging our thinking and decision-making. This segment explores strategies to mitigate the impact of unconscious bias and uphold high standards within the judicial system. Kristine Van Dorsten, ACC, LSW is a social worker, trainer, and coach who regularly conducts leadership trainings for the Judicial Branch on topics such as relationship building, emotional intelligence, communication, conflict management, bias and ethics.
