EVENT SCHEDULE

30 a.m. Registration, Continental Breakfast: (coffee, juice, pastries, fruit, yogurt, etc.)

00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Legal Ethics: Samuel C. Bellicini is a solo practitioner in San Rafael California, a past president of the Association of Discipline Defense Counsel, and a member of the Other Bar. From his unique and invaluable perspective as both a respected State Bar discipline defense attorney and a former defendant, he will provide an overview of the newly revised California Rules of Professional Conduct, highlighting the most significant changes and the provisions most likely to affect you and your practice.

15 a.m.-11:15 a.m. Competence: Coping With the Unique Challenges of Legal Practice: Speaker Richard Carlton is the former Executive Director of the California Lawyer Assistance Program. His presentation includes (1) an examination of the stress, anxiety, depression and substance abuse too often experienced by legal professionals; and (2) a discussion of strategies for coping with these challenges. Insights are offered into the personality traits of attorneys and the qualities of the legal profession that combine to make lawyers significantly more susceptible to these maladies than the general population. Mr. Carlton inserts a bit of humor and irony into this otherwise serious subject. Self-reflection is encouraged while the audience is engaged in a thought-provoking discussion.

30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Elimination of Bias in the Legal Profession: Practicing in a fair and ethical manner requires awareness of our biases and willingness to constantly examine, challenge, and change our thinking and decision-making. This segment explores strategies to mitigate the impact of unconscious bias and uphold high standards within the judicial system. Attendees are encouraged to share their own personal experiences and viewpoints regarding this topic, especially in light of the #MeToo movement and recent high-profile instances of this issue arising in public, legal, and political spheres.
