9:00 a.m. Legal Ethics: A moderated discussion featuring a three-judge panel discussing and fielding questions regarding the nuts and bolts ethical issues presented when alcoholism and other substance abuse enters the courtroom. (1 hour MCLE credit) Panel: Hon. Harold Kahn, S.F. Sup. Ct.; Hon. James Collins. S.F. Sup. Ct.; Hon. Lawrence Terry, Santa Clara Sup. Ct. (ret.)

10:15 a.m. Elimination of Bias: A thought-provoking and challenging presentation designed to raise awareness regarding the many and varied ways that institutionalized racism still pervades our justice system, with an eye towards motivating attorneys to be part of the solution. (1 hour MCLE credit) Speaker: Noah Griffin, J.D., Journalist, Entertainer.

11:30 a.m. Substance Abuse in the Legal Profession: A review of the brain chemistry of addiction and alcoholism, as well as a discussion of the behavioral and health consequences of the disease. Insights are offered into the personality traits of attorneys and the qualities of the legal profession that combine to make lawyers significantly more susceptible to addiction, and more difficult to treat, than the general population. The presentation includes a case study of an addict attorney, as well as a self-diagnosis exercise for attorneys to utilize if they are concerned that they may have a problem. Concluding remarks are directed towards both systemic and individual solutions, with references to specific strategies and resources available to attorneys.
